Indinavir

A potent and specific HIV protease inhibitor that appears to have good oral bioavailability.

A protease inhibitor drug used to treat HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) infection. Indinavir (Crixivan) is an antiviral agent that prevents HIV from multiplying, thereby reducing the amount of active virus in the body. Indinavir is not a cure for HIV or AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) but is part of a “cocktail” of drugs that work together to reduce the amount of the virus in the blood to undetectable levels, making HIV a manageable chronic illness rather than a fatal disease.

A protease-inhibitor antiviral drug used in combination with nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors to treat HIV infection. A drug with a range of potentially serious side-effects, its use should be coupled with counselling and monitoring of the effects.
