Infect

To enter, invade, or inhibit another organism, causing infection or contamination.

To contaminate someone or something with microorganisms that cause disease or toxins.

To cause pathogenic organisms to be present in or upon, as to infect a wound.

When an organism seeks to enter into a symbiotic relationship with another organism, it may do so either on a temporary or permanent basis. However, it is important to note that the term “inoculate” should not be used interchangeably with this concept, as inoculation does not necessarily lead to an infection. Additionally, the term “contaminate” should not be used in this context either.
