Inferior vena cava

Large vein that carries deoxygenated blood from the lower half of the body into the right atrium.


The large vein that returns blood from the lower body regions to the right atrium of the heart.


Large vein that returns deoxygenated blood to the heart from the body below the diaphragm. It is formed by junction of the common iliac veins in the lower back region and travels upward along the vertebral column, pierces the diaphragm, and empties into the right atrium of the heart.


Large blood vessel that receives blood from the lower limbs and the pelvic and abdominal organs; structure begins at the fifth lumbar vertebra and continues anterior to the right atrium of the heart.


A major blood vessel responsible for carrying blood back to the heart from the legs, pelvis, and abdomen is called the inferior vena cava.
