The gap in the abdominal muscles that allows the testicles to move from near the kidney to the scrotum is known as the inguinal canal. While this canal is usually sealed at birth, sometimes it doesn’t fully close. When this happens, parts of the abdominal contents, like the intestines, can push through, leading to a condition called an inguinal hernia.
