Intensifying screen

A device consisting of a layer of fluorescent material which is placed in contact with the film in a radiographic cassette. Radiation from a therapeutic process interacts with the fluorescent phosphor, releasing light photons. These expose the film with greater efficiency than would the radiation alone. Thus patient exposure can be reduced.

In radiography, a paired sheet of photostimulable (fluorescent) materials surrounding the x-ray film, used to translate an incoming image carried by x-ray photons into light. Light exposes x-ray film more readily than does photon radiation; the use of intensifying screens reduces the need for high levels of radiation exposure during imaging.

Within the realm of radiographic technology, a configuration comprising two adjacent screens, meticulously crafted from luminescent crystals, which are tightly sandwiched in close proximity to the radiographic film. This entire setup is carefully housed within a specialized radiographic cassette.
