Intern

A medical graduate who is working in a hospital before being licensed to practise medicine.


Physician (graduate of a medical school) in the first postgraduate year, learning under the supervision of more experienced physicians in a hospital; sometimes called a first-year resident.


A resident in the first year of hospital training after medical school. An intern is able to practice medicine only under the supervision of an attending physician. Today interns are more frequently referred to as first-year residents.


A medical or dental graduate, living in a hospital, who assists and receives instruction from a resident in preparation for being licensed to practice medicine or dentistry.


A person who has already had formal training in a profession who is now obtaining supervised practical training. The term is no longer restricted to physicians; in fact, the physician intern of the past is now called a first year resident physician.


An American term for a doctor-in-training who carries out his or her duties and learns in hospital, usually spending some of his/her time living there. The terms preferred in the UK were house officer or senior house officer (SHO), but the latter has now been replaced by Foundation Year 1 (FY1), FY2 etc.


A physician or surgeon on a hospital staff, usually a recent graduate receiving a year of postgraduate training before being eligible to be licensed to practice medicine.
