Ionization

Dissociation into ions.

The removal of an electron from a neutral atom, resulting in a positively charged ion (the ionized atom) and a free, negatively charged electron. Ionization at the cellular level can lead to cell death or mutation.

The separation of an atom or molecule into positive and negative ions.

The phenomenon through which an atom undergoes the acquisition or loss of an electron, consequently attaining a net charge and transforming into an ion. Ionization can occur as a result of radiation exposure or various other mechanisms.
