Ischemic heart disease

When the heart is receiving insufficient amounts of blood and oxygen.

Illness that results from poor nourishment via the blood stream; develops as a result of narrowed or obstructed blood vessels that prevent adequate blood flow to the heart’s tissues.

Disease caused by blood flow to the heart muscle that is insufficient to meet its oxygen needs. The shortfall in blood flow and oxygen supply occurs because of obstruction in one of the coronary arteries, the blood vessels that provide oxygen to the heart muscle. The obstruction can be caused by a buildup of fatty material (plaque), a blood clot, or a spasm in the artery.

A lack of oxygen supply to the heart altering cardiac function. The most common cause of myocardial ischemia is atherosclerosis of the coronary arteries. Depending upon several factors, including oxygen demand of the myocardium, degree of narrowing of the lumen of the arteries, and duration of the ischemia, the end result is temporary or permanent damage to the heart.

A blockage in the coronary artery or intense chest pain.
