John William Dunne

Author of An Experiment With Time (1927) who thought dreams foretold future events. Dunne served for a short time in the British army and was an inventor and designer of some of the early airplanes.

Beginning in 1898, Dunne became convinced that his dreams sometimes foretold future events as well as including information from the past. He became convinced, first, that this foresight precognition was his word was common. To test his theory, he recorded his dreams as soon as he woke and invited family and friends to join him. He laid down rules to minimize the effects of coincidence and rules about what was an admissible foresight rules which could be bent occasionally. And he found that there were sufficient successes to warrant extending the project. He also found that by concentrating on some subject, for example a book he was about to read, he could find evidence of precognition while awake to dream was not essential.
