Jumper’s knee

A painful condition suffered by athletes and dancers in which inflammation developisn the knee joint.

An irritation, sprain, or overuse of the large tendon that lies just below the kneecap. This tendon, called the patellar tendon, allows the knee joint to straighten and extend. Jumper’s knee, medically termed patellar tendinitis, is caused by repeated pressure on the knee’s tendon during activities that require frequent jumping, such as basketball, net ball, volleyball, and long jumping. The resulting irritation causes symptoms of pain, swelling, and inflammation of the tendon.

An overuse syndrome, marked by chronic inflammation and infrapatellar tendonitis, resulting from repetitive jumping or leg extension exercises. The usual treatment is nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, rest, and phonophoresis.
