Larva

A stage in the development of an insect or tapeworm, after the egg has hatched but before the animal becomes adult.

The early form or first stage of an insect during its development.

The preadult or immature stage hatching from the egg of some animal groups, e.g. insects and nematodes, which may be markedly different from the sexually mature adult and have a totally different way of life. For example, the larvae of some flies are parasites of animals and cause disease whereas the adults are free-living.

The pre-adult stage of insects and nematodes, occurring between the egg and the sexually mature adult.

General term applied to the developing form of an insect after it has emerged from the egg and before it transforms into a pupa, from which it emerges as an adult.

The nascent and undeveloped stage of an organism, which upon birth or hatching does not resemble its parent and necessitates a process of metamorphosis to acquire adult characteristics, is known as the juvenile form. This transitional phase marks a pivotal period in the organism’s life cycle, during which it undergoes profound physical and physiological changes, ultimately culminating in the acquisition of mature features and functionalities.
