Lie

To be in a flat position.

In pregnancy, a general term for whether the fetus is longitudinal (up-and-down) or transverse (horizontal) in the uterus.

During pregnancy, the orientation of the fetus with respect to the mother’s body is significant. Typically, as pregnancy progresses, the fetus’s long axis (from head to tailbone) aligns parallel to the mother’s axis. However, if the fetus is positioned diagonally or horizontally (in a transverse lie), it can lead to an abnormal presentation during labor. In such cases, the fetus’s shoulder or body, instead of the head, might be situated over the cervix, necessitating a cesarean section for delivery.
