Liquid meals

Many athletes consume liquid meals, also known as meal replacement beverages, because they are convenient and can often be consumed closer to the time of the event or training session. For example, many endurance sports, such as running, cycling, and triathlon, have early start times, which prevent athletes from consuming solid meals prior to competition, since these foods can potentially delay digestion and absorption relative to some liquid meals. Another advantage is that many available formulas produce little residue in the gastrointestinal tract. Most meal replacement beverages are avail¬ able in cans, which is extremely convenient and eliminates the need for preparation.
