Liver biopsy

A diagnostic procedure in which a needle is used to remove a small piece of the liver for testing. The tissue is examined under a microscope for abnormalities or to assess the damage to the liver. This procedure may be performed to diagnose cirrhosis, hepatitis, liver cancer, or other diseases.


The removal of tissue from the liver with a large-bore needle that captures a core of tissue.


A surgical intervention involving the extraction of a small segment of the liver to facilitate examination. This can be achieved by either inserting a needle or a slender tube directly through the skin and muscle, or by creating a small incision through which the needle or tube is guided into the liver to collect a sample of liver tissue.


A diagnostic procedure involving the extraction of a small tissue sample from the liver, usually conducted with the use of local anesthesia. The primary objective of this test is to facilitate the diagnosis of liver-related illnesses.
