A noninvasive technique that uses radioactive compounds to record and display an image of the liver. Liver scans are useful in the diagnosis of problems such as abscesses and tumors. Before the test, a person receives an intravenous injection of a radioactive compound that is absorbed by the liver. A radiation detector records radiation emitted by the compound. The liver is photographed using a scintillation camera or X rays.
