  • Cardinal symptom

    A fundamental symptom of a disease.  

  • Alarm symptom

    A symptom that raises the concern that a patient may have a severe illness and requires careful evaluation. For example, in patients with digestive illnesses, findings such as anemia, anorexia, bleeding, dehydration, fever, weight loss, or a family history of cancer or inflammatory bowel disease are considered alarm symptoms.  

  • Accidental symptom

    A symptom occurring incidentally during the course of a disease but having no relationship to the disease.  

  • Accessory symptom

    A minor symptom, or a non-pathognomonic one.  

  • Symporter

    A membrane protein that carries two different ions or molecules in the same direction through the membrane, as in the absorption of glucose linked with that of sodium ions in the small intestine.  

  • Symphysis of jaw

    An anterior, median, vertical ridge on the outer surface of the lower jaw representing a line of union of its halves.  

  • Symphysiorrhaphy

    The surgical repair of a divided symphysis.  

  • Symphysion

    The most anterior point of the alveolar process of the lower jaw. The front most part of the lower jaw.  

  • Symphyogenetic

    Concerning the combined effect of heredity and environment upon the development and function of an organism.  

  • Symphalangism

    An ankylosis of the joints of the fingers or toes.
