  • Sursumversion

    The process of turning upward; simultaneous movement of both eyes upward.  

  • Sursumvergence

    An upward turning of the eyes to maintain single binocular vision. The upward movement of the eyes, also known as supravergence.  

  • Sursumduction

    Elevation, as the power or act of turning an eye upward independently of the other one. The capability to raise the line of sight of one eye higher than the other, and the extent to which this can be achieved.  

  • Surrogate father

    A man who serves as a substitute father for a child’s biological father.  

  • Sex surrogate

    A professional sex partner employed to assist persons with sexual dysfunction.  

  • Surrender

    Giving up a health care professional license, e.g., at retirement or as a means of resolving a disciplinary action brought forward by a health care supervisory board.  

  • Surprise test

    A test designed to identify anterior shoulder instability. The relocation test for anterior glenohumeral instability is performed.  

  • Surname

    The family name, as distinguished from the individual’s given or Christian name. In some societies, the surname is written first.  

  • Surgical resident

    A physician who is enrolled in a hospital-based training program to complete the requirements for board certification in a surgical specialty.  

  • Delayed surgical recovery

    Extension of the number of postoperative days required to initiate and perform activities that maintain life, health, and wellbeing.
