Stratum supravasculare
The layer of circular and longitudinal muscle fibers of the myometrium lying between the stratum subserosum and the stratum vasculare.

Stratum subserosum
The layer of smooth muscle fibers of myometrium that lies immediately under the serous coat.

Stratum submucosum
The layer of smooth muscle fibers of the myometrium lying contiguous with the endometrium.

Stratum spongiosum
The middle layer of decidua of the endometrium.

Stratum spinosum
The prickle cell layer, so called because of its prominent intercellular attachments. It is part of the stratum malpighii.

Stratum reticulare
The recticular layer of the corium just beneath the papillary layer.

Stratum malpighii
The inner layer of the epidermis. It was first seen with low magnification and described in the 1600s by Marcello Malpighi. It includes both the stratum germinativum and stratum spinosum of today’s nomenclature.

Stratum lucidum
The translucent layer of the epidermis between the stratum corneum and the stratum granulosum in the palms and soles. Clear, transparent layer of the epidermis under the stratum corneum.
