Basic stain
A chemical used to add pigment to the nuclear or acidic components of cells.

Acid-fast stain
A stain used in bacteriology, especially for staining Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Nocardia, and other species. A special solution of carbolfuchsin is used, which the organism retains in spite of washing with the decolorizing agent acid alcohol. A distinctive dyeing technique is employed to minutely discern the bacterial culprits responsible for tuberculosis.

Staggers
Vertigo and confusion that occur in decompression illness. A term used to describe a range of conditions that exhibit symptoms of impaired coordination in movement and an unsteady gait. These conditions include ailments like sheep gid, equine encephalomyelitis, botulism, loco poisoning, grass tetany, and certain neurological disorders such as Parkinson’s disease and tabes dorsalis.

The third or terminal stage of malaria during which sweating occurs.

Resting stage
Term sometimes used for a cell that is between mitotic divisions. It is not accurate because the cell is metabolically active and is producing a new set of chromosomes for the next division.

The stage following an infection (e.g., with measles or chickenpox) before the characteristic rash appears.

The incubation period of an infectious disorder.

Stage of invasion
The period in which the causative agent is present in the body before the onset of a disease.

Hot stage
Febrile stage in a malarial paroxysm.
