  • Decompensated shock

    The late phase of shock in which the body’s compensatory mechanisms (e.g., increased heart rate, vasoconstriction, increased respiratory rate) are unable to maintain adequate perfusion to the brain and vital organs. Typically, the patient is hypotensive in decompensated shock.  

  • Compensated shock

    The early phase of shock in which the body’s compensatory mechanisms (e.g., increased heart rate, vasoconstriction, increased respiratory rate) are able to maintain adequate perfusion to the brain and vital organs. Typically, the patient is normotensive in compensated shock.  

  • Anesthesia shock

    Shock due to an overdose of a general anesthetic. The anesthetic should be immediately withheld and oxygen, mechanical ventilation, and vapor drugs should be given.  

  • Shinrin-yoku

    In traditional Chinese medicine, walking and bathing in the forest to promote good health and prevent the effects of aging. The air and aromas of the forest are also believed to be therapeutic.  

  • Shiner

    A slang term for a black eye, a dark or purplish hue to the skin seen just beneath the eyes. Black eyes may be seen in some people with nasal allergies or after facial injuries.  

  • Saber shin

    A condition seen in congenital syphilis in which the anterior edge of the tibia is extremely sharp.  

  • Shim

    In magnetic resonance imaging, to improve the homogeneity of the main magnetic field.  

  • Shigella sonnei

    A species that is a frequent cause of bacillary dysentery.  

  • Shigella flexneri

    A species that is a frequent cause of acute diarrhea in humans.  

  • Shigella boydii

    A species that causes acute diarrhea in humans.
