  • Sensorivasomotor

Vascular changes induced by sensory nerve stimulation. Conveying impulses from sense organs to the reflex or higher centers.

  • Sensorimuscular

Muscular activity in response to a sensory stimulus.

  • Sensitometry

In radiography, the use of densities on an exposed and processed film to evaluate, monitor, and maintain processors, intensifying screens, film types, and exposure systems.

  • Sensitometer

A calibrated instrument with an optical step wedge and light source that puts a graduated set of densities on a radiographic film; used in quality control monitoring for film processors. The fundamental function of this system is to generate consistent exposures on both surfaces of medical X-ray film, enabling the measurement and analysis of the…

  • Sensitizer

In allergy and dermatology, a substance that makes the susceptible individual react to the same or other irritants. Any substance that induces sensitization.

  • Sensitized

Made susceptible, or immuno-reactive, to an antigen. Becoming more sensitive, especially to bacteria or proteins that can trigger an allergic response, is a growing concern for doctors. This issue arises when topical agents containing certain medications, like antibiotics, are used to treat skin conditions. Sometimes, this sensitizes the patient to that specific drug. Consequently, if…

  • Protein sensitization

Sensitization as a result of previous injection of a foreign protein into the body.

  • Passive sensitization

Sensitization produced in a healthy person by injecting the person with the serum from a sensitized animal or human.

  • Autoerythrocyte sensitization

A syndrome characterized by the spontaneous appearance of painful ecchymoses, usually at the site of a bruise. The areas itch and bum. The condition is commonly associated with headache, nausea, vomiting, and occasionally with intracranial, genitourinary, and gastrointestinal bleeding. With few exceptions, the disorder affects women of middle age. The cause is assumed to be…
