Mindblown: a blog about philosophy.

  • Fascicular heart block

A conduction defect in either or both of the subdivisions of the left bundle branch.

  • Right heart

The right atrium and ventricle. The right atrium receives deoxygenated blood from the body; the right ventricle pumps this blood to the lungs.

  • Left heart

The left atrium and ventricle. The left atrium receives oxygenated blood from the lungs; the left ventricle pumps this blood into the systemic circulation.

  • Hypertrophy of the heart

A regional or generalized increase in myocardial mass. It may be caused by exercise, chronic hypertension, genetic illnesses, or valvular dysfunction.

  • Fibroid heart

An obsolete term for scarring of the myocardium (e.g., after myocardial infarction).

  • Fatty infiltration of the heart

An abnormal accumulation of triglycerides in the myocardium, seen on biopsy specimens as clear vacuoles or droplets.

  • Dilation of the heart

Enlargement of the chambers of the heart, typically because of diseases of the heart valves or cardiomyopathy. It may result in congestive heart failure.

  • Conduction system of the heart

Specialized myocytes in the heart that conduct the electrical impulses throughout the heart. In order of normal conduction, it consists of the sinoatrial node, the intra-atrial tracts, the  atrioventricular node, the bundle of His, the right and left bundle branches, and the Purkinje fibers.

  • Boatshaped heart

A heart in which one ventricle is dilated and hypertrophied as a result of aortic regurgitation.

  • Beriberi heart

Heart failure caused by thiamine (vitamin B1) deficiency (e.g., in patients with chronic alcoholism or malnutrition).
