  • Active assistive range of motion

    An exercise in which an external force assists specific muscles and joints to move through their available excursion. AAROM exercises are used when the patient has difficulty moving or when tissue forces need to be reduced.  

  • Urokinase-type plasminogen activator

    A protein that degrades extracellular tissues. It has been linked to the spread of some cancers by invasion and metastasis.  

  • Activated carrier

    A term sometimes used as a synonym for coenzyme.

    In cancer research any investigation designed to determine whether a particular lifestyle choice made by patients can be used to prevent cancer.  

  • Thermogenic action

    Action of a food, drug, or physical agent to cause a rise in output of body heat.  

  • Tendon action

    Passive movement of a joint when a two-joint or multi-joint muscle is stretched across it.  

  • Synergistic action

    The ability of a drug or muscle to aid or enhance the action or effect of another drug or muscle; opposite of antagonistic action.  

  • Specific action

    The particular action of a drug on another substance or on an organism or part of that organism.  

  • Sparing action

    The effect of a nonessential nutrient in the diet such that it decreases the requirement for an essential nutrient. For example, protein is especially important for tissue growth and development in children. If protein intake is sufficient but caloric intake is inadequate, a protein deficiency will develop.
