  • Actinomycetin

    A lytic substance obtained from Actinomyces; it destroys some gram-positive and gram-negative organisms.  

  • Actinomycete

    Any bacterium of the order Actinomycetales.  

  • Actinomycetales

    An order of bacteria that includes the families Mycobacteriaceae, Actinomycetaceae, Actinoplanaceae, Dermatophilaceae, Micromonosporaceae, Nocardiaceae, and Streptomycetaceae.  

  • Actinomyces antibioticus

    A species from which the antibiotic actinomycin is obtained.  

  • Actinism

    The property of radiant energy that produces chemical changes, as in photography or heliotherapy.  

  • Actinic

    To radiant energy, such as x-rays, ultraviolet light, and sunlight, especially the photochemical effects. Actinic, pertaining to alterations induced by ultraviolet rays from sunlight, encompasses conditions such as actinic dermatitis (inflammation of the skin) and actinic keratosis (roughness and thickening of the skin).     A form of transference, in which tension is relieved when one responds to a situation as if it were the same situation that originally gave rise to the tension; a displacement of behavioral response from one situation to another.  

  • Acrylonitrile

    A toxic compound used in making plastics.  

  • Acrylate

    A salt or ester of acrylic acid.  

  • Acrotrophoneurosis

    Trophoneurosis of the extremities with trophic, neuritic, and vascular changes. It is usually caused by prolonged immersion in water.
