  • Horizontal transmission

    A term sometimes used in a title for very high sophistication in the computing and communications fields. For example, the National Library of Medicine (NLM) has an officer with the title Assistant Director for High Performance Computing and Communication.  

  • High Performance Computing Act

    An Act introduced by Senator Albert Gore in 1991 outlining his ideas for “highways of the mind”. These highways would be supported and encouraged by federal research and development activities in order to provide a national intellectual resource, which then would be turned over to private enterprise.  

  • Hemodialysis unit

    A unit of the hospital set up to treat patients with certain renal (kidney) disorders by the use of hemodialysis.  

  • Hemlock Society

    An organization of individuals who believe that it should be permissible for an individual to end his own life. The name came from the use of a poison obtained from the poison hemlock tree for such a purpose. An organization that publishes information about physician-assisted suicide, and decisions by patients regarding end-of-life choices.
