  • Sulfone

    One of a group of drugs closely related to the sulfonamides in structure and therapeutic actions. Sulfones possess powerful activity against the bacteria that cause leprosy and tuberculosis. The best known sulfone is dapsone.  

  • Sulfomyxin

    An antibiotic, similar to polymyxin B, given by local application or intramuscular injection to treat infections of the skin, mucous membranes, eyes, and ears caused by Pseudomonas. Common side-effects include flushing, dizziness, blurred vision, and weakness.  

  • Sulfinpyrazone

    A drug given by mouth for the treatment of chronic gout. The main side-effects are nausea and abdominal pain; the drug may also activate a latent duodenal ulcer and it should not be taken by patients with impaired kidney function.   • Sulfamethoxazole

    A drug of the sulfonamide group. It is taken by mouth and is effective in the treatment of infections of the respiratory tract (including bronchitis), the urinary and gastrointestinal tracts, and the skin.   • Sudek’s atrophy

    Rapid development of osteoporosis in a hand or foot, resulting from injury, infection, or malignancy. Osteoporosis in the hand or foot which develops quickly as a result of injury, infection or malignant growth.  

  • Succus entericus

    The clear alkaline fluid secreted by the glands of the small intestine. It contains mucus and digestive enzymes, including enteropeptidase, erepsin, lactase, and sucrase.  

  • Submentovertical

    Denoting a horizontal view of the base of the skull.  

  • Stylohyoid

    A muscle that extends from the styloid process of the temporal bone to the hyoid bone. It serves to draw the hyoid bone backward and upward.  

  • Strobila

    The entire chain of segments that make up the body of an adult tapeworm. The series of proglottids of the adult form of a tapeworm.

    A cell or group of cells found between muscle fibers that responds to stretching of the muscle by transmitting impulses to the central nervous system through sensory nerves.
