  • Nerve tract

    A group of nerve fibers that are either afferent or efferent in their function.  

  • Nerve decompression

    Surgical intervention to relieve pressure on a nerve by excision of constricting bands of tissue or by enlarging the bony canal.  

  • Nerve cell fiber

    Linked neurons that transmit electrical and chemical messages between the body and central nervous system.  

  • Neoplastic heart syndrome

    Absence or stenosis of the mitral and aortic valves associated with an abnormally small left ventricle and aortic arch, possibly due to genetic factors.  

  • Negative pressure ventilation

    Mechanical support of respiration using chambers that encase the body to create intermittent subatmospheric pressure to extend the chest outward and fill the lungs.  

  • Necropsy

    Examination of a body to determine the cause of death; autopsy. An infrequently employed medical expression referring to a postmortem examination of a body, commonly known as an autopsy.  

  • Nasal ala

    Flared cartilage on each side of the nostril.  

  • Myringa

    Tympanic membrane; also known as the eardrum.  

  • Myofascial pain syndrome

    Chronic discomfort in muscles and soft tissues surrounding joints; also known as fibromyalgia syndrome. A group of conditions causing pain in or near the joint (called the temporomandibular joint, or TMJ) that connects the lower jaw to the skull and in the muscles that control chewing.     Surgical repair of the muscle of the heart by suturing.
