  • Hemostatic forceps

    Clamping tool with a clasp that holds the blades in a closed position; used to stop blood flow at the end of a blood vessel and control hemorrhage; often called “hemostat”.  

  • Hemophilia A

    Inherited blood disorder resulting in the absence of clotting factor VIII; this is the most common type of hemophilia, occurring almost exclusively in males.  

  • Hemoglobin A

    Normal hemoglobin that binds with oxygen and carbon dioxide. Adult hemoglobin, commonly known as normal hemoglobin, comprises four heme molecules, two alpha-globin molecules, and two beta-globin molecules.

    Manner of walking with a stiff, extended leg, lacking any flexion of the knee or ankle, resulting in a semicircular movement of the foot with each step.   • Hemiazygos vein

    One of the blood vessels of the thorax that begins in the left ascending lumbar vein, proceeds through the thorax, and eventually goes up to the azygous vein.  

  • Hemianalgesia

    Loss of sensitivity to pain on one side of the body. Numbness or lack of pain sensation on one side of the body.  

  • Haustra

    Pouchlike structures in the intestinal walls that expand and contract to hold varying amounts of food during digestion.    

  • Hamstring muscle group

    A collective mass of muscles of the upper posterior leg that flex the leg; composed of biceps femoris, semitendinosus, and semimembranosus muscles.  

  • Halo traction

    Use of pins inserted into the cranium and attached to a circular metal ring, forming a halo and stabilizing cervical fractures.  

  • Hallux rigidus

    A painful condition of the great toe where the joint cartilage deteriorates at the articular surface of the metatarsal, resulting in painful ambulation and stiffening of the joint.
