  • Oligodactyly

    Congenital condition characterized by the absence of one or more fingers or toes.  

  • Olfactory center

    Group of neurons in the brain, located near the junction of the parietal and temporal lobes, concerned with the interpretation of odors.  

  • Odoriferous

    Fragrant, possessing an easily perceived odor; depending on the context, the quality of the odor may be either pleasant or not.  

  • Odontiasis

    Process of cutting teeth; teething.  

  • Oculus

    Oculi, eye, usually designated oculus dexter (OD), the right eye; and oculus sinister (OS), the left eye. Eye; the organ of vision made up of the eyeball and optic nerve.  

  • Obtund

    To blunt or deaden sensitivity, as to pain by use of an anesthetic agent. To dull or decrease perception of pain. To blunt or deaden sensitivity; for example, by the application of a local anesthetic, which reduces or causes complete loss of sensation in nearby nerves.  

  • Obsessive-compulsive

    Characterized by a tendency to repeat certain acts or rituals (e.g., washing the hands more than is necessary, usually to relieve anxiety).  

  • Obligate anaerobe

    Organism that cannot grow in the presence of oxygen (e.g., Clostridium botulinum). An organism that can live and reproduce only in the absence of oxygen.  

  • Obligate aerobe

    Organism that cannot grow in the absence of oxygen (e.g.. Streptococcus pneumoniae). A microorganism that can live and reproduce only in the presence of oxygen.  

  • Nuchal cord

    Condition in which the umbilical cord is wrapped around the neck of the baby as it is being born. It most cases it can be slipped over the child’s head or cut without harm to the child. The condition in which the umbilical cord is found wrapped around the neck of the fetus during delivery.…
