Paschen’s stain
Method for elementary bodies, alcohol fixed material being treated with Loeffler’s flagella mordant, followed by dilute carbol-fuchsin. The slide is examined by critical high power microscopy.

Parvochromogen
A bacterium the colonies of which develop only a little colour. Term particularly used among the mycobacteria.

Para-nitrobenzoic acid test
Test of the ability of mycobacteria to grow in a medium incorporating 500 μg/ml of the PNBA. Only tuberculosis is completely inhibited by the drug.

Paracolon bacilli
Term applied to sundry late – or non-lactose-fermenting coliform organisms not classifiable as Salmonella or Shigella. Recent additions to the range of characterization tests allow differentiation of most of these strains into the Citrobacter, Bethesda-Ballerup, Escherichia, Arizona, Alkalescens-Dispar ox Providence groups.
