  • Ecological inventory

    A survey performed by a special education teacher to identify skills that a handicapped child needs to develop in order to function successfully as an adult in work and in everyday living situations, such as those of stores, restaurants, parks, and buses.  

  • Early admission

    In education, formal acceptance of a student into college before completion of high school studies, a form of acceleration.  

  • Due date

    The date on which a baby’s birth is expected, traditionally calculated by doctors as 280 days (40 weeks) from the beginning of the woman’s last menstruation, even though fertilization probably did not take place until two weeks later, at the time of ovulation; also called expected date of confinement (EDC) by doctors.   • Doctoral degree

    The highest degree offered for graduate studies, beyond the master’s degree. A doctorate, often a Ph.D. (doctorate of philosophy), is generally awarded to a student who has successfully completed a specified program, normally taking at least three or four years of study beyond the bachelor’s degree.  

  • Dispositional conference

    A multidisciplinary meeting, often involving a social worker, pediatrician, and psychologist or psychiatrist, at which decisions are made about short-term custody of a child in cases of possible child abuse and neglect. At a later dispositional hearing, a court or administrative official decides longer-term questions about the child’s custody.  

  • Discovery learning

    A learning style in which a child is given information or materials about a variety of specific situations and learns to draw a general conclusion or rule from them; also called inductive learning.  

  • Disclosing tablets

    In dental care, tablets that harmlessly tint areas of the teeth that have not been brushed thoroughly. Such tablets are especially useful for young children, up to perhaps age eight, as they are learning to brush their own teeth.
