  • Nutrient requirements

    The amounts of nutrients absolutely required by an individual to avoid the symptoms of deficiency disease and to optimize health and well-being.  

  • Null mutation

    A mutation that completely eliminates the function of a gene, usually because it has been deleted. A change in DNA or RNA that does not result in any change in the protein product or content of a cell.  

  • Net protein use

    A measure of the biological value of a dietary protein based on the amount of protein retained in the body as a percentage of that consumed.  

  • Novel food

    A food that the consumer has never eaten or a food newly developed by food manufacturers.  

  • Normal clinical values for blood

    Ranges of values for nutrients and metabolites in blood.  

  • No-observed-effect level

    The highest concentration of a substance that may be administered to a test animal in any way without causing that animal to be distinguishable from a control to which the substance is not administered.

    Malabsorption/diarrhea due to localized reaction to certain foods.
