  • Preclinical

    Taking place before diagnosis. Referring to the first part of a medical course, before the students are allowed to examine real patients. Occurring before diagnosis of a definite disease is possible.  

  • Precise

    Very exact or correct.  

  • Precipitation

    The action of forming a precipitate. The process of a substance being separated from a solution by the action of a reagent so that a precipitate forms. The process of causing solids to form within a solution.  

  • Precipitate labour

    Unusually fast labour, lasting two hours or less. It can be dangerous both to the mother and to the child.  

  • Preceptorship

    A period of time during which a recently trained nurse, midwife or health visitor can gain practical experience working with a specialist who advises and guides them. A period of practical training under the supervision of an experienced or certified practitioner or specialist.  

  • Preceptor

    A specialist who gives practical training to a student.  

  • Precentral gyrus

    A motor area of the cerebral cortex. A dorsoventral gyrus on the lateral cerebral hemisphere just in front of the central sulcus of the brain. It marks the posterior edge of the frontal lobe and contains the primary motor area.  

  • Precaution

    An action taken before something happens. An action taken in advance to protect against danger, harm, or possible failure.  

  • Precancer

    A growth or cell which is not malignant but which may become cancerous. A condition that tends to become malignant.  

  • Pre-anaesthetic round

    An examination of patients by the surgeon before they are anaesthetised.
