  • Pliable

    Able to be bent easily. Capable of being bent or twisted easily; flexible. Plicae, fold of tissue (e.g., plica vocalis, vocal cord).  

  • Pleuropneumonia

    Acute lobar pneumonia, the classic type of pneumonia.  

  • Pleuron

    A membrane that encases the lung.  

  • Pleurodynia

    Pain in the muscles between the ribs, due to rheumatic inflammation. Acute inflammation of the muscles between the ribs, causing pain, tenderness, and often fever.   • Pleurodesis

    Treatment for a collapsed lung, in which the inner and outer pleura are stuck together. Production of adhesions between the parietal and visceral pleura; it is usually done surgically or by instillation of drugs or chemicals. This method is used to treat recurrent pneumothorax and malignant pleural effusions.  

  • Pleurocentesis

    An operation in which a hollow needle is put into the pleura to drain liquid. Insertion of a hollow needle into the pleural cavity through the chest wall in order to withdraw fluid, blood, pus, or air.   • Pleurocele

    A condition in which part of the lung or pleura is herniated. Fluid in the pleural cavity. A lung herniation with a buildup of fluid in the pleural space.  

  • Pleural mesothelioma

    A tumour of the pleura, caused by inhaling asbestos dust.  

  • Pleural fluid

    A fluid which forms between the layers of the pleura in pleurisy. The fluid contained in the membranous sac that surrounds each lung. Fluid secreted by serous membranes in the pleurae that reduces friction during respiratory movements of the lungs. When excessive pleural fluid is secreted and not absorbed, a pleural effusion accumulates.
