Iliac region
One of two regions of the lower abdomen, on either side of the hypogastrium.

Iliac fossa
A depression on the inner side of the hip bone. One of the concavities of the iliac bones of the pelvis.

Ileostomy bag
A bag attached to the opening made by an ileostomy, to collect faeces as they are passed out of the body.

Ileosigmoidostomy
A surgical operation to create a link between the ileum and the sigmoid colon. A surgical procedure where the ileum is connected to the sigmoid colon to divert around a diseased section of the cecum, ascending, or transverse colon.

Referring to both the ileum and the rectum.

Ileoproctostomy
A surgical operation to create a link between the ileum and the rectum. A surgical operation in which the ileum is joined to the rectum, usually after surgical removal of the colon. The establishment of an opening between the ileum and rectum.

Ileocolitis
Inflammation of the ileum and the colon (small and large intestines). The commonest cause is Crohn’s disease; tuberculosis is a rarer cause.

A branch of the superior mesenteric artery.

Ileocaecocystoplasty
An operation to reconstruct the bladder using a piece of the combined ileum and caecum.
