  • Unconditioned response

    The reaction (response) that is made to the unconditioned stimulus in classical conditioning. An example is an inborn reflex. A response to a stimulus which occurs automatically, by instinct, and has not been learned. An inherent response rather than one that is learned.  

  • Unconditioned reflex

    Unconditioned response. Instinctive, unlearned response to a stimulus; also called instinctual response; instinctive reflex; inborn reflex. A natural or inherited reflex action; one not acquired.  

  • Unconditional positive regard

    According to Rogers, an essential characteristic of a client-centered therapist, who needs to be totally accepted by the client, in order for him or her to adequately evaluate the client’s behavior in relation to progress toward self-actualization.  

  • Uncommon foods

    Foods introduced into a weight reduction diet that a person finds unfamiliar and perhaps unappetizing.  

  • Uncertainty condition

    A state in which multiple variables make behavior unpredictable, complete certainty conditions.  

  • Unbalanced diet

    A diet lacking adequate representation of nutrients essential for body functioning, balanced diet.  

  • Umbilical cord

    The flexible cord connecting the fetus and the placenta, containing the umbilical blood vessels, and that carries nutrients to the fetus and waste from the fetus through the placental wall.   • Umbilical clamp

    A device, usually of plastic, used to compress the umbilical cord, allowing it to be cut without endangering the mother and neonate from blood loss.  

  • Ultra vires

    In law, outside the power of an individual or body. “Outside the powers.” A legal term referring to activities of a corporation which it is not authorized to do either by its charter or the laws of the state in which it is incorporated.  

  • Ultrasound scan

    A procedure whereby sound waves are used to project an image on a video screen to aid the physician during amniocentesis and other diagnostic procedures during pregnancy, ultrasound device. The imaging procedure generates visual representations of arteries on a screen, serving as a means to assess blood flow, identify obstructions, and measure arterial dimensions.
