Nonspecific urethritis (NSU)
An inflammation of the urethra before a causative agent was known. Since 1974, is referred to as nongonococcal urethritis.

Symptoms appearing in a person that do not clearly indicate a single disease or single organ system disorder. Older persons more than those in other age groups come to the attention of health care providers due to nonspecific reasons.

A part of the body’s immune system that is activated regardless of the nature of the invading foreign substance, specific immune mechanism.

The effects of a drug that are not directly associated with the chemical action of the drug, placebo effect.

The concept that people who do not smoke have the right to breathe air free from smoke, especially tobacco smoke.

Nonsense syllable
A combination of letters, usually consisting of two consonants with a vowel in between, that do not form a word in the language of the person using it. Used by Effinghaus in experiments investigating memory and rote learning.

Non-aspirin, over-the-counter analgesics.

A condition for which there is no effective treatment.

Nonreactive measures
Techniques for conducting research, such as the study of archives and anonymous observation, that eliminate the problem of subjects’ reactivity to the experiment.

Nonpsychotic disorders
Mental disorders in which the person’s functioning is seriously inhibited but in which thought processes are not as grossly distorted as in some of the psychotic disorders and the person recognizes the symptoms.
