  • Nation at risk report

    Issued in 1983 by the National Commission on Excellence in Education. It called for significant reform in public education as a matter of national security, because of the many major deficiencies in public education at the time.  

  • National urban league

    Founded in 1910. Its basic functions are the promotion of health through education and other health-related activities, as well as the advocacy of basic civil rights.  

  • National toxicology program

    Conducts toxicology testing on those substances most frequently found at sites on the National Priorities List of the EPA and has the greatest potential for human exposure.  

  • National safety council

    A nonprofit, nongovernmental agency dedicated to promoting the safety of individuals and communities throughout the United States. The was founded in 1913 and chartered by Congress in 1953. A nonprofit organization whose mission is to promote and influence safety and health at work, on the road, at home, and in the environment.  

  • National research council (NRC)

  • National priorities list (NPL)

    A listing of sites that have undergone preliminary assessment and inspection with respect to toxic chemical spills and other discharges to determine which locations pose immediate threats to persons living or working near the release. These sites are most in need of cleanup, promulgated by EPA under CERCLA.
