  • Maternal inheritance (Maternal eggect)

    Inherited traits from the mother to her offspring that is unaffected by the inheritance from the father.  

  • Material resource

    An object that is used as an aid to learning, e.g., a textbook, CD-ROM.  

  • Mate exchange

    A situation in which spouses change partners for purposes of sexual intercourse.  

  • Matching to sample

    A procedure in which a person has to choose one of two alternative stimuli which is the same as a third sample stimulus.  

  • Matching test item

    A two-column item wherein the learner is to match by some criteria items that are related.  

  • Matching process

    The theory that a person will select a prospective romantic relationship from those who are approximately equivalent to himself or herself in terms of physical attractiveness.    

  • Matching hypothesis

    The hypothesis that persons of a given level of physical attractiveness will seek out partners of a similar level.  

  • Matching funds

    Funds or in-kind contributions that must be provided by a third party in order for a grant or other type of funding to be approved. The prospective funding source often specifies the type of and the percentage of funding that must be matched.  

  • Matching

    In epidemiology, a technique for controlling variables that are actual or confounding. Comparison in order to select objects or persons with similar characteristics.  

  • Master’s degree

    A graduate studies degree, usually entailing 1-2 years of full-time academic study beyond the bachelor’s degree. A degree awarded to a student who has successfully completed a course of study beyond the bachelor’s degree level, normally after a one- or two-year course of fulltime enrollment; the first degree awarded for most graduate work, sometimes later…
