  • Latin grammar school

    A classical secondary school with a curriculum largely centered around Greek and Latin; its primary purpose being preparation for college.  

  • Lateral sulcus

    A major horizontal fissure on each side of the cerebral hemisphere, separating the frontal and parietal lobes from the temporal lobe.  

  • Lateral organizational communication

    An organizational structure allowing for communication to flow horizontally to another part on the organizational chart.  

  • Lateral meristems

    Secondary tissue, such as cambium and cork cambium.  

  • Lateral malleolus

    The rounded projection on the lateral side of the ankle joint, medial malleolus. The part of the end of the fibula which protrudes on the outside of the ankle. Process on outer edge of fibula at lower end.  

  • Lateralization

    An asymmetry of function of the two cerebral hemispheres. In most people who are right handed, the left hemisphere is specialized for language, while the right hemisphere is better at visual and special tasks.  

  • Laterality

    A sense of “sideness,” including the tendency to use one hand for specific tasks. An awareness of the two sides of one’s body and which is left and which is right. Some children with right-left disorientation have a poor sense of laterality and often confuse left and right; these are often children who lack dominance…

  • Lateral inhibition

    The tendency of adjacent neural elements of the visual system to inhibit each other; it underlies brightness contrast and accentuation of contours.  

  • Lateral hypothalamus

    A region of the hypothalamus that is said to be a hunger center and to be in an antagonistic relation to a supposed satiety center.  

  • Lateral color

    The spectrum of colors seen as a result of the spherical surface of the lens.
