Drugs that suppress the body’s immune system and thus prevent the autoimmune destruction of normal body tissues, immunosuppressive effect. Medications utilized to dampen the immune system and inhibit the rejection of a transplant.

Abnormal function of the immune system. Often the result of drugs used to treat certain illnesses. An entity capable of reducing the immune response in an individual.

Immunologic tolerance
A condition in which the body fails to reject a foreign object or pathogen.

Treating an object or living thing as a foreign body, thus rejecting it.

Immunodeficient
Having an impaired or nonfunctioning immune system. Lacking immunity to a disease.

Western blot technique.

Immunoassay pregnancy test
A pregnancy test that uses an antigen-antibody response to determine the presence of HCG in a urine sample.

To be vaccinated.

Immune surveillance hypothesis
The proposal that specific cells of the immune system are able to detect and destroy cancer cells as they arise in the body.

The condition of the body’s natural defenses to disease is influenced by a person’s heredity, age, history of illness, diet, and physical and mental health. Included are the production of antibodies and their mechanism of action.
