Heteroploid
Possessing a chromosome number that is not a multiple of the haploid number common for the species.

Heteronomous morality
The developmental precursor to autonomous morality; it is characterized by the belief in moral realism, expiative punishment, objective responsibility, and obedience to authority.

Heterogeneous grouping
In education, a group or class consisting of students who show normal variation in ability or performance, homogeneous grouping. A class that includes students of a wide range of achievement and ability, as opposed to the homogeneous groups found in a tracking system.

Heterogamy
A condition in which gametes are morphologically distinguishable as male or female. The union of gametes that are dissimilar in size and structure. This union occurs in higher plants and animals.

Heterogametic sex
In genetics, producing unlike gametes particularly with regard to the sex chromosomes. In species in which the male is “XY”, the male is the female (XX), homogametic.

Heterofermentation
A fermentation in which the end products are varied. Fermentation of carbohydrates by lactic acid bacteria (lacto-bacilli, streptococci) to give carbon dioxide and alcohol as well as lactic acid.

In botany, large, functionless cells in the filaments of certain algae.

Pertaining to ring compounds that contain other atoms in addition to carbon atoms as part of the ring.

Heterochrony
A change in the normal temporal sequence for the development of tissues, organs, and other animal parts. Such changes are thought to have played a role in the origins of some species.

Heterocatalytical function
A molecule directing or catalyzing a molecule of a different structure.
