The internal mechanism that enables a person to retain and maintain biological, psychological, and sociological identity.

The presence of heart disease but without any known organic breakdown, functional disease.

Functional group
In chemistry, an atom or group of atoms that determine or influence the chemical behavior of the molecule to which it is attached. A portion of a molecule that participates in interactions with other substances. Examples are acyl, carboxy, carbonyl, ester, and sulfhydryl groups.

In psychology, a set to think of objects in terms of their normal function.

Functional disease
A condition lacking any physical or observable causes. A general term for inorganic disease or a disease in which organic changes are not evident; a disturbance of the function of any organ.

Persons whose illnesses, disabilities, or social problems have reduced their ability to perform self-care and household tasks in an independent manner, frail elderly.
