  • Acute stress

    Stress brought about suddenly; usually as a response to a traumatic situation, acute situational maladjustment. A form of stress in which the body responds or reacts to imminent danger.

  • Acute phase of an illness (disease)

    The period of an illness or injury in which the primary concern of both patient and medical personnel is the patient’s survival. The person’s survival depends on the immediate steps taken to deal with the physical trauma of the disease condition.

    Pain that lasts less than 6 months. Discomfort identified by sudden onset and relatively short duration, mild to severe intensity, and a steady decrease in intensity over several days or weeks.   • Acute onset

    The sudden occurrence of a disorder or disease.  

  • Acute effect

    The immediate, short-term response to a single dose of a drug, chronic effect. Any adverse effect of a transient exposure to a noxious agent, such as an infectious microorganism, ionizing radiation, or a toxin.  

  • Acute alcoholism

    A misnomer, since alcoholism is a chronic condition. The use of the term is inherently contradictory. Generally, is referring to intoxication through the use of alcohol or acute intoxication through the use of alcohol. Intoxication, or the short-term disruption resulting from excessive alcohol consumption.  

  • Acute alcohol intoxication

    A potentially fatal elevation of the blood alcohol concentration, often resulting from heavy, rapid consumption of alcoholic beverages.
