  • Perceived racism

    Subjectively experiencing that one is the target of prejudice or discrimination.  

  • Passive-aggressive behavior

    A form of resistance to others through procrastination, excuse-making, obstructionism, or poor or destructive performance of tasks where the person engaging in the behavior does not take responsibility for his or her actions or inactions.  

  • Parasympathetic branch

    The branch of the autonomic nervous system that damps down the fight-or flight response and is responsible for the body’s basal energy conservation and restoration state.  

  • Paraphrasing

    The simplest form of active listening that involves rephrasing the communicator’s message.  

  • Outcome expectations

    One’s belief that a particular action will lead to a particular outcome.  

  • Organizational stress

    Refers to how the structure and processes of the organization bring about stress for the workers.  

  • Organizational role stress

    Concept of organizational stress that includes role conflict, role ambiguity, and role overload.  

  • Organizational injustice model

    A model of organizational stress that assumes that stress occurs when the organization’s interpersonal transactions, procedures, or outcomes are perceived as unfair.  

  • Open awareness

    A mindfulness meditation practice in which the meditator disengages the analytical mind; suspends judgment; and becomes a passive observer of the images, sensations, feelings, and cognitions that stream through consciousness.  

  • Observing self

    The component of the self in mindfulness practice that notices thoughts.
