Myalgia
Pain in a muscle or muscles. Tenderness or pain of the muscles themselves; muscular rheumatism. Muscle pain or tenderness. Diffuse muscle pain, occurring in many infectious (e.g., influenza, measles, rheumatic fever, toxoplasmosis) and other disorders (e.g., fibromyositis, Guillain-Barre syndrome, muscle tumor), and sometimes as the result of certain drugs. Muscle pain, often due to an…

Mutually protected articulation
An occlusal scheme where all the posterior teeth disocclude during mandibular movements while the occlusion is supported by the anterior teeth. At maximum intercuspation, the posterior teeth reduce the occlusal forces applied on the anterior teeth so the forces applied on the anterior teeth are not excessive.

Mush bite
An obsolete slang term for a record of the mandible in relation to the maxilla without using baseplates but instead by using a nonrigid material alone (i.e., wax).

Musculoskeletal pain
Deep, somatic pain that originates in skeletal muscles, facial sheaths, and tendons (myogenous pain), bone and periosteum (osseous pain), joint, joint capsules, and ligaments (arthralgic pain), and in soft connective tissues. Pain experienced in the bones, joints, muscles, or other components of the musculoskeletal system can arise from various factors. These can range from temporary…

Muscular splinting
Muscular contraction at a nonrest state that impairs function. It is associated with involuntary movements.
-
Muscle splinting
Slang for a muscle contraction initiated to avoid the pain associated by passively stretching the muscle.
-
Muscle spasticity
A clinical situation when opposing muscles have increased contractibility and tension, impeding movements of the agonistic muscles.
-
Muscle spasm
An abrupt involuntary contraction of a muscle that is associated with pain and can occur even when the muscle is at rest. A sudden contraction of a muscle. Persistent involuntary tightening of one or more muscles, usually causing pain from excessive rigidity. Muscle spasm may be caused by a strain, injury, fracture of a related…

Muscle relaxant
A medication used for treating muscle tension or spasm. A drug which reduces contractions in the muscles, e.g. baclofen. Drug that reduces the contractility of muscle fibers by blocking the transmission of nerve impulses at neuromuscular junctions, by increasing the time between contractions of fibers, by decreasing the excitability of the motor end plate, by…
