Mucus
The clear, viscous secretion of the mucous membranes, composed of secretions of the glands, along with various inorganic salts, desquamated cells, and leukocytes. Viscid secretion of the mucous membrane. Secretion of mucous glands, containing mucin; protects epithelia. A viscous secretion produced by the mucous membranes that moisten and protect the membranes. The secretion of mucous…

Mucostatic
Refers to oral mucosa at a state of rest, without displacement. Prohibiting the flow of mucus.

Mucosal periimplant tissue
Mucosal tissue around dental implants, which forms a tightly adherent band consisting of a dense collagenous lamina propria covered by stratified squamous keratinizing epithelium. The sulcular and junctional epithelium are similar to a natural tooth. The difference is noticed in the connective tissue which is not attached to the implant like in the tooth.

Mucosal insert (syn)
Button implant, epithelial implant, intramucosal insert, mucosal implant. Mushroom‐shaped device fastened to the tissue surface of a removable denture that fits within a prepared gingival receptor site. The use of multiple mucosal inserts enhances a denture’s retention and stability.
-
Mucosal cell
Cells that secrete mucus, such as those found in the oral cavity.

Oral mucosa
The tissue lining the oral cavity. Epithelial lining of the oral cavity continuous with the skin of the lips and mucosa of the soft palate and pharynx. The oral mucosa consists of the following. A) Masticatory mucosa: mucosa of the gingiva and hard palate. B) Specialized mucosa: mucosa of the dorsum of the tongue. C)…

Alveolar mucosa
Mucosa covering the basal part of the alveolar process and continuing without demarcation into the vestibular fornix and the floor of the mouth. A thin, nonkeratinized mucosal layer covering the alveolar process of maxillae and mandible and loosely attached to underlying bone. It is continuous with the mucosa of the cheek, lips, tongue, and palate.…

Mucosa
Mucous membrane that forms the soft tissue barrier to the environment, particularly in the oral cavity. It is loosely attached to the periosteum, is movable, and consists of epithelium, basement membrane, and lamina propria. A mucous membrane, or tunica mucosa. Moist tissue lining, for example, the mouth (buccal mucosa), stomach (gastric mucosa), intestines, and respiratory…

Mucoperiosteum
Layer of periosteum, connective tissue and epithelium that covers bone of the maxilla and mandible. Periosteum that has a mucous surface, as in the middle ear and hard palate.
-
Mucoperiosteal flap
Full‐thickness mucosal flap, generally including gingiva, alveolar mucosa, and periosteum. A flap of mucosal tissue, including the underlying periosteum, reflected from the bone during oral surgery.
