  • Monoplane occlusion

The arrangement of teeth where tooth contact in all excursions occurs in a single plane of occlusion.

  • Monoplane articulation

The arrangement of teeth in a single plane of occlusion.

  • Monoplane

The occlusal surface of teeth where all cusp heights are within the same plane.

  • Monomer

The chemical initiator of a polymerization process. The basic molecular subunit from which, by repetition of a single reaction, polymers are made. For example, amino acids (monomers) link together via condensation reactions to yield polypeptides or proteins (polymers). A monomer is analogous to a link (monomer) in a metal chain (polymer). A simple molecule of…

  • Monocyte

Mononuclear phagocytic leukocyte, 13–25 μm in diameter, with an ovoid or kidney‐shaped nucleus. Precursor to a macrophage, it is formed in the bone marrow from a promonocyte and is transported to tissues such as the lung and liver, where it develops into a macrophage. Large white blood cell that ingest microbes, other cells and foreign…

  • Moment of inertia

Resistance to rotation of a body; used to explain the relative change if bending moments are based upon the cross‐sectional radius of a structure.

  • Moment

The magnitude of force applied to a rotational system at a distance from the axis of rotation.

  • Mold guide

A selection of artificial teeth demonstrating the dimensions and shape of commercially available artificial teeth.

  • Mold chart

Representation of the different dimensions of a denture tooth’s (or teeth’s) shape and size.

  • Modulus of elasticity (syn)

Elastic modulus. Ratio of stress over strain, when the deformation is elastic. It is a measure of stiffness or flexibility of a material. A stiff material has a high modulus of elasticity and a flexible material has a low modulus of elasticity. Also called Young’s modulus.
