  • Histomorphometry

The quantitative study of the microscopic organization and structure of a tissue (e.g., bone, soft tissue, and vascularity, from histologic specimens; involves a large range of measurements, including numbers, length, surface area, volume, angles, and curvature), especially by computer‐assisted analysis of images acquired from a microscope. The quantitative analysis of tissue structure (e.g., its components,…

  • Histology

That part of anatomic study that deals with the minute structure, composition, and function of the tissues. The science that studies microscopic structures of living things, histological. The study of the anatomy of tissue cells and minute cellular structure. Science of tissues, including their cellular composition and organization. The branch of medical science that studies…

  • Histiocyte

A large phagocyte (macrophage) in the connective tissue derived from circulating monocytes. It has additional functions including antigen processing and immunoregulation. A macrophage of the connective tissue, involved in tissue defence. A fixed macrophage, i.e. one that is stationary within connective tissue.

  • Histamine

A low molecular weight, bioactive amine that causes smooth muscle contraction of bronchioles, increased capillary permeability, and increased secretions by the nasal and bronchial mucous glands. Released primarily from mast cells and basophils. 1H-Imidazole-4-ethanamine. A depressor amine derived by enzymatic decarboxylation of histidine. It is a powerful stimulant of gastric secretion, a constrictor of bronchial…

  • Hinge position

Orientation of parts allowing hinge movement between them.

  • Hinge joint

A joint that allows movement in only one plane, such as a door hinge. A joint in which a convexity on one bone fits into a corresponding concavity on another bone allowing motion in one plane only. Freely movable (synovial) joint in which bones are articulated in such a way as to permit extensive motion…

  • Hinge axis

An imaginary line created by rotation of the mandible through the sagittal plane.

  • High noble metal alloy

A dental casting alloy composed of a minimum of 60% noble metal (gold, platinum, palladium, rhodium, ruthenium, iridium, osmium) by weight with at least 40% gold as classified by the American Dental Association.

  • High lip line

The greatest height to which the inferior border of the upper lip is capable of being raised by muscle function.

  • Hexed

A component or a dental implant with a hexagonal connection interface.
