Surgical removal of parathyroid gland tissue for the treatment of hyperparathyroidism. In hyperparathyroidism, the parathyroid glands, for unknown reasons, become enlarged and produce excessive amounts of parathyroid hormone. To determine which of the glands are involved, diagnostic imagine, including an ultrasound scan, an isotope scan, and possibly an angiogram, may be performed. Parathyroidectomy usually cures the disorder.

If hyperparathyroidism stems from an adenoma, typically just one of the parathyroid glands is affected and necessitates removal. In cases where all the glands are enlarged and excessively active, a greater amount of parathyroid tissue might be extracted.
